MARTYR DUMB! Wanna-be Bryant Vinas couldn’t hack Army and became a suicide slacker Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/martyr-dumb-wanna-be-bryant-vinas-hack-army-a-suicide-slacker-article-1.1066450#ixzz1t1Byl3T7

AS SUICIDE bombers go, this one was a real dud. Long Island slacker Bryant Vinas dropped out of the U.S. Army after just three weeks because training was “too difficult.” After he converted to Islam and hooked up with militants in Pakistan, he agreed to a suicide mission — because he couldn’t hack the high-altitude camp. Then Vinas, 29, flunked out of the martyrdom mission — and missed out on 72 virgin wives — because he hadn’t hit the Koran hard enough. “They told me I didn’t have enough religious knowledge,” Vinas testified in Brooklyn Federal Court. He moved on to Al Qaeda, where a trainer quickly noticed his attention to detail at mealtime was subpar. “I was just dipping bread into gravy. I wasn’t eating the meat chunks. I was recovering from a stomach problem,” he said. Vinas’ sad-sack tale unfurled at the trial of accused subway bomb plotter Adis Medunjanin. He had never met Medunjanin; prosecutors put him on the stand to show how militant groups like Al Qaeda turn wanna-be jihadists into ambassadors of terror. Born in Queens and raised Catholic on Long Island, Vinas worked as a truck driver, forklift operator and taxi driver after high school, then joined the Army in March 2002. “I found it too difficult,” he said of basic training. “It was mentally overwhelming. I left right before they were issuing out rifles.” He converted to Islam in January 2004 and started listening to cleric Anwar al-Awlaki’s anti-U.S. speeches. A book called “Inside the Jihad” helped convince him to go overseas. He said he expected that he would never return but “die within a few weeks of fighting in Afghanistan.” Within 10 days of arriving in Pakistan in 2007 — with nothing but some clothes, hygiene products and an MP3 player — he had hooked up with militant fighters who spoke some English. Almost immediately, he took part in an operation, joining a mortar team that planned to attack a U.S. base in Afghanistan. It never happened. “There were too many planes flying overhead,” he said. “We would’ve been wiped out.” Next, he was asked if he was willing to participate in a suicide mission, and he readily agreed. “I was having a difficult time with the altitude. I was getting very sick. I thought a martyrdom mission would be easier,” he said. As a reward, Vinas said, he expected 72 virgin wives in the afterlife and forgiveness of all his sins. Once again, the mission was not accomplished — because his handlers didn’t think he was schooled enough to be a martyr.
